Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

Postdoctoral position on drivers of compound climate extremes

Are you interested in working on the dynamics of compound climate extremes, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a postdoc position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden"s most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. It offers a broad range of expertise that can contribute to solving important societal issues.

Earth is a dynamic and constantly changing planet. To understand how this planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of disciplines, including rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development.

Our research combines natural sciences and technology with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. More than 300 people from over 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland.

Our six research divisions:

• Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Palaeobiology • Wind Energy

For more information see: www.uu.se/earthsciences

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at: LUVAL.

You will work within the frame of the ERC grant ”DYnamical drivers, predictability and trends of compound CLimate Extremes”. The project is scheduled to start on 1st May 2026

Duties

The project focuses on quantitative analyses of mid-latitude compound climate extremes in recent and future climates. You will specifically work on connecting the drivers and occurrence of compound climate extremes to different atmospheric circulation features. Teaching/supervising duties up to 20% are possible on a voluntary basis. You will be based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, but will be expected to travel both nationally and internationally.

Requirements

PhD degree in physics, meteorology, climate science or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above subjects. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who has a strong self-drive, works independently and takes initiative. You should have past experience in connecting the dynamics and occurrence of climate extremes with specific atmospheric circulation features. You should also demonstrate excellent spoken and written communication skills in English. We further require good cooperation skills as the work involves collaborations with different research groups internationally.

Additional qualifications

Knowledge of atmospheric dynamics and past experience of work with atmospheric feature detection are a merit. We place particular weight on the quality of peer-reviewed publications.

The application should contain:

  • A Curriculum Vitae.
  • A short research statement (maximum 2 pages) describing how the candidate’s past experience is relevant to the topic of the postdoc.
  •  A list of publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Contacts of two references (names and full contact details, including telephone number). Please do not include reference letters.
