Researcher in polar geology with a focus on the High Arctic

The project's main aims are to reconstruct the robust paleogeographic position of North Greenland, to characterise deformation and metamorphism along major structures, and to understand the juxtaposition, lateral movement and relationships of terranes in the European-North American Arctic (North Greenland, Ellesmere Island, Svalbard) from the Mesoproterozoic to Carboniferous, including various orogenic events (Timanian, Caledonian, Ellesmerian). The project will include research of archived and newly collected rocks from North Greenland, as well as analysis of newly collected earthquake data. The project's durability is 2 years. 

Duties

The candidate will conduct research within a Swedish Research Council project focused on the geology of the High Arctic. The project includes fieldwork, and the candidate should be willing to spend time outdoors for sampling and data collection. While the topic of the project is broad, we are looking for a candidate with an interest in petrological investigations of metamorphic rocks and geochronological and stratigraphic investigations of sedimentary rocks. Teaching load in the field of metamorphic petrology and geochronology may reach up to 20%.

Requirements

We are seeking a candidate with a PhD in geology or equivalent. The position requires a strong publication record in the geology of polar regions. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required. 

Personal suitability is of high importance for this position. We are looking for a researcher with good analytical skills and a strong ability to work both independently and in collaboration with your colleagues. Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams is required.

Additional qualifications

 It is an advantage if you have experience in the following areas:

• Metamorphic petrology
• Sequence stratigraphy
• Geochronology (thermochronology and geochronology of detrital minerals)
• Electron microprobe analysis, including operating the equipment
• Raman spectroscopy;
• Extensive fieldwork experience in the High Arctic.

A driving license for a car is a merit.
