The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 90 persons are employed at the Department and approximately 1000 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.

The Department and two ongoing research projects are now looking for an Amanuens. The first project analyzes the war in Ukraine, with a particular focus on infrastructure damage and its broader societal and political implications. The second project examines the effects of climate extremes and environmental conditions on health outcomes. Project leader is Stefan Döring.

Both projects are embedded in the Department’s research on armed conflict, environmental change, and human security, and involve systematic data work, monitoring of current developments, and research support across multiple work streams.

Tasks
The Teaching assistant will provide research support across both projects. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring and documenting recent developments related to the war in Ukraine
  • Supporting data collection, data management, and integration of multiple datasets
  • Assisting with reviewing and synthesizing academic research articles
  • Supporting analysis related to infrastructure damage, environmental impacts, and conflict dynamics
  • Conducting targeted literature searches and background research
  • Other research-related tasks as needed within the projects.

Required qualifications
For employment as a teaching assistant, it is a requirement that you are admitted as a student at undergraduate or advanced level. The following qualifications are also required:

  • Current studies in Peace and Conflict Studies
  • Previous experience with armed conflict monitoring, preferably related to the war in Ukraine
  • Experience working with databases, including data collection, management, or coding
  • Very good proficiency in English (reading and writing)
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks across parallel projects.

Additional qualifications 

  • High proficiency in Ukrainian
  • Knowledge of Russian
  • Knowledge of the environmental or infrastructure-related consequences of war
  • Familiarity with climate extremes, environmental stressors, or environment–health linkages
  • Prior experience working with conflict-, environment-, or health-related datasets.
