Uppsala University, Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering

Do you want to work with a team whose work is of great importance to industry, society, and academia? As a post-doctoral researcher, you will focus on developing intelligent, adaptive, and sustainable manufacturing systems to enhance operational and energy efficiency. The project examines how digital twins, simulation-based multi-objective optimization, and AI-driven decision support systems can enable manufacturing industries to maintain stable production, optimize energy usage, and recover quickly from disruptions. The research will involve reinforcement learning, predictive modeling, and real-time adaptive control to dynamically optimize production sequencing, resource allocation, and energy-efficient scheduling.

The Department of Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering consists of three departments: Industrial Engineering and Management, Quality Science, and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has around 100 employees and conducts its research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. For more information, see the department's website. This position will be located at the Division of Industrial Engineering and Management in Uppsala.

Industrial engineering is a broad, interdisciplinary subject that spans several sub-areas from organization and management, innovation and entrepreneurship, and industrial and social marketing in technology- and innovation-intensive activities, through automation and optimization to machine design, production and production systems. For more information, see the division´s website

Duties

The work mainly involves research and up to 20 percent teaching. This means that you actively contribute to the implementation of the research project, as well as develop your own research ideas within the framework of the project's focus. The work includes, among other things:

  • initiate, plan and carry out sub-studies within the framework of the project, including formulation of research questions, quantitative methods, data collection and analysis, and writing of scientific articles,
  • contribute to the administration that the above entails.

Requirements

  • PhD in industrial engineering, Computer Science, Informatics, or another related engineering science or interdisciplinary discipline, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to this
  • Very good knowledge and experience in manufacturing systems modeling, simulation (i.e., DES), and digital twins.
  • Very Good knowledge and experience in machine learning, reinforcement learning, and AI-based optimization for production control.
  • Very Good knowledge and experience in multi-objective optimization and predictive modeling.
  • Proficiency in programming in Python, C++, or similar languages.
  • Very good knowledge of English, both oral and written.

The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Additional qualifications

Meritorious are:

  • Previously published studies relevant to the project in highly ranked journals
  • Proven ability to work independently and experience with planning research and grant writing
  • Documented experience in industrial collaboration and practical implementation of research.

About the employment

The employment is a temporary position of two years according to the central collective agreement. The scope is full-time. Entry date as soon as possible or by agreement. Location: Uppsala
