Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Are you interested in working with measurement systems in an advanced laboratory infrastructure where we develop and test superconducting devices for the particle accelerators of the future? We are an international team who work together to deliver the best possible support for our local research as well as for international research infrastructures relying on superconducting accelerator technology, and we are looking for a research engineer to help us with this challenging and exciting work.

The position is placed at the FREIA laboratory, governed by the FREIA division under the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Physics and Astronomy is the largest department of the university, with about 400 employees, and hosts research in many different fields of physics. At FREIA we do research and development on instrumentation and particle accelerators, in collaboration with international research networks as well as with large-scale research institutes like CERN in Switzerland and ESS in Sweden.

At the FREIA laboratory we design, build and test state-of-the-art equipment that will be used for frontline scientific research. The laboratory houses two large cryostats in which superconducting accelerating cavities or magnets are cooled down to extremely low temperatures using liquid nitrogen and helium, while powering them with strong fields or currents under rigorous monitoring, in order to evaluate their performance.

This complex infrastructure depends on advanced measurement systems for radiofrequency (RF)
measurements and magnetic field probing, which require regular maintenance, adjustments and
expansions to meet new needs and tasks. The successful application will have the opportunity to
play a key role in the use and improvement of these systems.

Duties
The work tasks include

  • Use and development of low-level radiofrequency (LLRF) systems
  • Software development for LLRF systems.
  • Operation and development of RF measurement systems at low and high power.
Planning, executing and documenting qualification tests of superconducting cavities and
    acceleration modules.
  • Contributing to the general operation and development of the FREIA laboratory.
  • Contribute to the work with other research activities at the FREIA laboratory, e.g.
    superconducting magnets.

We work in international collaborations, which may require travel. Occasional work outside regular
office hours may also be necessary.

Requirements

Applicants must have a Master degree in physics or electrical engineering, or equivalent. You shall
demonstrate a drive and determination to achieve results, be open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned. You shall take responsibility for and organize multiple tasks simultaneously.

The following experience and competencies are required:

• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
• Ability to read and understand technical information.
• Ability to communicate well both technically and non-technically.
• Good organizational and documentation skills.
• Ability to produce good written work and reports.

To succeed in the work the candidate should have through knowledge and experience with the following:

  • Matlab or equivalent
  • Programming in C/C++, python etc.
  • Software development
  • Applied mathematics, e.g. data analysis
  • Labview
  • Applied superconductivity

Additional qualifications
Knowledge and experience with the following is a merit:

  • Signal theory
  • Controls theory
  • Microwave engineering
  • Low-level FPGA programming (HDL)
  • Labview FPGA programming
  • LLRF systems
