Research assistant

The Department
The department is looking for a research assistant who can support two research projects in 2026. The aim of one project is to conduct a study on the occurrence of mediation in armed conflicts and to contribute to the development of knowledge about the conditions for conflict resolution in a changed global context. The project leader is Isak Svensson. The second project examines legal mechanisms for war crimes, focusing on compiling data on legal processes and analyzing their consequences. The project leader is Lisa Hultman.

Work tasks

• Data collection: assist with materials for case studies on mediation efforts, collect data on the roles of civil society in peace negotiations, and produce supporting materials that describe previous research and the state of research regarding research debates in the field of conflict resolution
• Contribute to the implementation of a survey among individuals with experience of working in peace mediation organizations
• Data management: write code in R and/or Stata to merge different data sources and data structures
• Descriptive analysis of data
• Literature review: summarize literature and organize references
• Administrative tasks to support the research projects.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies, or equivalent
• Excellent knowledge of English (both spoken and written)
• Excellent knowledge of R and/or Stata
• Experience in handling and merging datasets
• Very good collaboration skills and ability to work independently.

Merits

• Experience in data collection, especially in peace and conflict research or similar
• Good knowledge of literature on peace negotiations, mediation, and the role of civil society in peace processes
• Experience in working with statistical analysis.

About the position
The position is: a temporary position (9 months), with the possibility of extension. The scope of the position is: 100%. Start date: 23 February 2026, or as agreed. Location: Uppsala.
