Uppsala University is launching an excellence initiative focused on recruiting Assistant Professors, with the aim of attracting the future research leaders. The Department of Mathematics and the Department of Information Technology are seeking outstanding early-career researchers who would be a strong fit for either department.

Our workplace at the Ångström Laboratory hosts numerous nationally and internationally leading research environments, spanning everything from experimental sciences to fundamental research. The Department of Information Technology and the Department of Mathematics offer an international and interdisciplinary environment with strong research profiles. Our researchers work across all areas of mathematics and information technology, from theory to applications. We are now looking for an Assistant Professor who wants to help develop and strengthen our research and education in mathematics or information technology.

The position includes a start-up package for the recruitment of a doctoral student.

Both the Department of Information Technology and the Department of Mathematics holds leading positions in research and education at all levels. The departments also conduct active work on equal opportunities.

The Department of Information Technology is currently Uppsala University’s third-largest department, with more than 350 employees, including 120 faculty members and 120 doctoral students. The department is responsible for courses in a wide range of undergraduate and master’s programmes. Approximately 5,000 students take one or more courses at the department each year. The department hosts ten research programmes: Artificial Intelligence, Image Analysis and Human–Computer Interaction, Cybersecurity, Computing Science, Computing Education Research, Computer Architecture and Communication Systems, Computer Systems, Numerical Analysis, Automatic Control, and Computational Science. The department also runs a career development programme for the more than 20 Assistant Professors employed at the department.

The Department of Mathematics conducts education at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level in mathematics. The department has about 130 employees, including 40 PhD students. The department is responsible for teaching mathematics and mathematical statistics to a number of different programs at both undergraduate and graduate level: several different engineering programs, teacher’s programs, bachelor programs in the different areas of the faculty, as well as our own programs – the bachelor and master’s program in mathematics. The research of the department covers a broad spectrum of areas, divided into the research themes: Algebra, Logic and Representation Theory, Analysis and Partial Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems and Number Theory, Geometry and Physics, Probability Theory and Combinatorics, and Statistics, AI and Data Science.

Subject area

The position involves advanced research within one of the departments’ research programmes/research areas, as well as teaching in mathematics or information technology. The subject area is broad, and we are seeking strong researchers working anywhere from pure theoretical foundations to application-oriented research. Both specialisations within the respective disciplines and interdisciplinary research are of interest. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research areas strengthen or complement existing research environments.

Duties

You will work with:

  • teaching. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration and supervision of doctoral students.
  • research. Actively applying for and securing external grants. Establish an independent research group by defining and planning research activities within the scope of the position’s subject area.
  • administration. To participate in the general academic duties of the department. This includes serving on committees, taking on responsibilities beyond your own research and teaching assignment, contributing to the evaluation and development of teaching and research activities, working collaboratively with colleagues, and providing support and constructive feedback to colleagues.
  • keeping up to date in your subject area and following developments in society that are relevant to your work at Uppsala University.

In choosing between eligible candidates, emphasis will primarily be given to research and teaching expertise, according particular weight to research expertise. In addition, attention will be given to administrative and management expertise.

Qualifications required

You must have:

  • a PhD in mathematics, in one of the research areas central to the Department of Information Technology, or in another subject relevant to the position.. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed their PhD or attained equivalent expertise no more than seven years before the deadline for applications.
  • research expertise in mathematics or information technology. In assessing research expertise research quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. In addition to academic qualifications, research merits gained outside academia may also be taken into account, including for example development of technology and capacity for innovation.
  • had your main employment and conducted your research activities outside Sweden for at least the past four years immediately prior to the application deadline. Shorter stays in Sweden of a total of no more than twelve months may be accepted.                                        
  • ability to work with other people and otherwise meet the demands of suitability required to perform the duties well.
  • teaching expertise, where special weight will be attached to teaching in relevant subject for the position, and teaching quality. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must be afforded consideration. In addition to academic qualifications, educational and teaching qualifications from other activities may also be taken into account, which include, for example, supervision, internal training or mentoring programs. The ability to link teaching to research is important.
  • completed at least five weeks of teacher training for higher education of relevance to the organization and its activities or be considered to have acquired the equivalent knowledge. The required training for teachers in higher education may be completed during the first two years of employment if there are special circumstances.
  • a documented ability to teach in Swedish or English
  • documented skills and expertise in productive research collaborations and in successfully leading projects.
  • documented ability to successfully compete for and secure external research funding.
  • teaching expertise and research expertise that are relevant to the subject area and the duties that the position involves.

Other desirable/valuable qualifications

It would be an advantage if you have:

  • administrative expertise. Capacity to plan, organise and prioritise activities and to work in a structured manner that demonstrates an awareness of goals and quality.
  • management expertise. Developing, coordinating and leading operations and staff.

All qualifications must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both their quality and their scope.

When the University appoints new academic staff, candidates will be selected based on a qualitative overall assessment of their competence and expertise, taking into account their potential to perform and develop the duties of the position and to contribute to the positive development of the department.

Period of employment

The position of Assistant Professor is fixed-term for up to six years and is intended to provide qualifications for a permanent teaching position with higher eligibility requirements. During the appointment, there is the possibility to apply for promotion to Associate Professor. If the requirements are met and suitability is confirmed, the appointee may be promoted to a permanent position as Associate Professor

 

About the employment
