At the Division of Solid State Physics, Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering, Uppsala University
Full-time position for 4 months, 2026-02-16 to 2026-06-15
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education with a focus on materials science solutions for important societal challenges. Our department is an exciting workplace with research in a broad technology-related area, from basic research to large-scale applied research, and close contacts with students through the department's involvement in engineering, bachelors and master's programs. Our research and teaching are conducted within seven divisions with different research focuses, as well as a division that provides support and service. The department is an international place to work, and has around 230 active co-workers.

About the division
The Division of Solid State Physics is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Ångström Laboratory. At the division, we do both basic and application-oriented research that is related to energy and environmental aspects as well as life science and biomedical applications via our different research areas. Most commonly, we investigate physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials and compounds whether they will be used as coatings for smart windows, for gas sensors, photocatalytic coatings, and spintronics, or for biomagnetic applications or to create new magnetic materials for environmentally friendly energy technologies.

Project description
The project deals with the synthesis of novel nanostructured materials (ferrites) and the study of their magnetic and dielectric properties. Chemical synthesis methods such as sol-gel synthesis is employed to synthesize nanoparticle systems and nanocomposites. Crystal structures and chemical composition is investigated using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Magnetic properties are evaluated using SQUID and VSM-based magnetometry, while dielectric properties are recorded using LCR meters, impedance analyzers and other electronics.
The research is performed in collaboration with the Nanostructured Magnetic Materials Laboratory headed by Prof. Davide Peddis, University of Genova, Italy, and other local and international partners.
Duties
You are responsible for the synthesis and characterization (structural, magnetic, dielectric) properties of nanosystems. This includes the collection of data, as well as its analysis and discussion, and dissemination in scientific articles.
You are expected to work safely and independently in a lab environment, as well as effectively in a large multidisciplinary group of chemists and materials scientists.
Qualification requirements
Ph. D. degree in Physics or a related field.
We require very good written and oral skills in English as well as very good skills in writing scientific publications.
Additional qualifications
Special emphasis is placed on experience in the collection and advanced analysis of magnetic and dielectric data of nanomaterials.
We place great importance on personal characteristics and we are looking for you as a motivated researcher who takes great responsibility and is proactive. You are independent in your work and have good collaboration skills.
Your application must include
During the application period, we will continuously read application documents and call for interviews
