Uppsala University, Department of Organismal Biology

Are you interested in working with epigenomic datasets in the context of chemical hazards and human health in a friendly, thriving, international environment? Join the Molecular Toxicology and Epigenetics (EpiTox) group at the Department of Organismal Biology, working on epigenomic and other molecular profiling to uncover mechanisms underlying (neuro) developmental effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The EpiTox group is part of the research program Physiology and Environmental Toxicology, a growing, vibrant research environment where experimental models and molecular tools are used to study and understand cellular and molecular mechanisms in animals and plants underlying whole organisms' physiology, development, and responses to the environment.

You will be working in the Formas-funded project EpiDNT, a multi-partner project aiming at identifying epigenetic markers for exposure-induced human health impacts. Collaborator Carl-Gustaf Bornehag at Karlstad University will act as co-advisor for epigenetic analyses of human data in the SELMA study, a pregnancy cohort following mother-child pairs from early pregnancy up in adolescent.

Duties
The candidate will have two main duties: 1) bioinformatic and biostatistics analyses of different epigenomic data sets acquired by Oxford Nanopore sequencing (DNA modifications) from cellular models and by Illumina EPIC (DNA methylation) from human samples; 2) a literature review and meta-analyses of published data to identify and validate epigenomic markers of chemically induced neurodevelopmental effects.

The successful candidate is expected to plan, perform, analyse, and interpret their work independently, to write scientific publications and contribute to project reports, to participate in international meetings and conferences, to advise doctoral and master students, and engage in the scientific and social activities in the group, at the program and the department.

Requirements
PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology or fields deemed as similar by the employer. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Well-documented experience working with R or python, analysis of long read sequencing and DNA methylation data sets and knowledge about statistical analyses of such data and on environmental epigenomics is required. As the work will be carried out in an international interdisciplinary environment, excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.

Emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities. We seek a highly motivated person with original, creative and analytical thinking and team spirit. The applicant is expected to take initiative and work independently.

Additional qualifications
Experience with biostatistical methods in human data sets as well as (systematic) literature reviews and meta-analyses is advantageous.
