Postdoctoral Researcher with a focus on influenza A virus interspecies transmission
Are you interested in working with medical research, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a postdoc position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with approximately 250 employees and over 300 individuals affiliated with Uppsala University Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in various areas. Research takes place in close connection to clinical activities at Uppsala University Hospital and encompasses both fundamental studies on the causes of diseases and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. More information about the department's activities can be found at:

Job Responsibilities
Recent research has uncovered multiple barriers that limit the transmission and adaptation of avian influenza A viruses (IAVs). Our group has identified several factors that can contribute to IAV transmission and adaptation to new host(s) (PMID: 38127648, PMID: 38127648, PMID: 36934147). We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in viruses. The focus will be on projects related to the interspecies transmission of influenza viruses and exploring molecular barriers for interspecies transmission of influenza A virus. Such barriers can be (i) virus related (e.g. amino acid mutations or genetic reassortment) or (ii) Host related (e.g. cellular factors).
The work involves practical laboratory work (reverse genetics and single cell genomics) as well as a significant portion of bioinformatic analysis, such as RNA-seq data analysis. You might be involved in several projects within the research group.
The research group conducts both clinical studies and development of clinical diagnostics as well as basic research connected to pathogens in a One Health context. You will work with a team of diverse scientific backgrounds as well as interact with and supervise students in the group.
Requirements
The applicant should have a doctoral degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, with a focus on virus research. Practical experience in microbiological lab work with virus cloning/reverse genetics is expected. Experience to perform single-cell genomics and bioinformatic analysis are merits of interest. We value researchers who are eager to combine experimental and computational approaches in virus research. Fluent spoken and written English is necessary.
