Substitute Senior Lecturer in English

The Department of English comprises five profile areas within both teaching and research: English Linguistics, English Literature, American Literature, Irish, and the Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS). The department has c. 1,500 students per year, offers c. 60 different courses, and provides tertiary education at basic, advanced, and doctoral levels. We are looking for a temporary senior lecturer in English.

Duties

Teaching, supervision, and examination as well as administration and research. The teaching largely concerns literature courses within our BA programme in Global English and within various programmes for future teachers. The position may also involve other duties, such as teaching language proficiency and language structure from a comparative perspective, supervising and examining essays and degree projects at different levels, and course development and administration. Furthermore, the person who is appointed to the position would be welcome to participate in the department’s research and seminar activities and to apply for external research funding. The duties also involve following developments within the subject area and following developments within society at large that are relevant to working at the university.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for appointment as Senior Lecturer, the applicant must have demonstrated pedagogical competence; they must also have a PhD or the equivalent academic competence or other skills that are of importance considering the subject area and duties of the position.

In order to meet the requirement of pedagogical competence, the applicant must have completed at least ten weeks of relevant training in tertiary-level teaching or acquired the equivalent competence in other ways.

For this position, a PhD in English or another relevant subject area is a requirement for eligibility.

The academic, pedagogical, and professional competence must be relevant to the subject area and the duties involved in the position. The applicant should have the personal characteristics that are required to fulfill the duties of the position well. Such characteristics include flexibility, excellent cooperation skills, and collegial responsibility.

Assessment criteria

When selecting among eligible applicants, particular weight will be given to pedagogical competence within the subject area of the position. Documented ability to teach in English and to use Swedish as a working language will be considered important additional qualifications, as will documented familiarity with the Swedish educational system from primary to tertiary levels.

The assessment of academic and pedagogical competence will be accorded the same weight.

Academic competence refers to research qualifications. In assessing academic competence, research quality will be the primary consideration. The scope of the research, particularly its depth and breadth, will also be considered. Special weight will be given to research qualifications within English language didactics and to research on anglophone literature and literary didactics.

In addition, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and teaching at doctoral level and the ability to secure funding for research in competition with others will be considered. Documented ability to collaborate within the subject area as well as with society at large will also be considered.

Pedagogical competence refers to qualifications in education and teaching. In assessing pedagogical competence, teaching quality will be the primary consideration. The scope, including both breadth and depth, of the applicant’s teaching experience will also be considered. Special weight will be accorded to experience of training future teachers.

Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop education and teaching will be considered, as will the ability to connect teaching to research from the perspective of scholarship in the relevant subject, subject-specific didactics, and tertiary-level didactics. The ability to collaborate on issues regarding tertiary-level education within the university as well as with society at large is also considered part of pedagogical competence.

Administrative competence and leadership skills are important to the position and will be accorded significance. Administrative competence will be demonstrated by, for instance, the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize duties effectively and appropriately for their purpose and through the ability to set and meet deadlines. Administrative competence also includes overall operational planning, the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects priorities at the workplace, and the ability to work in a structured manner and with an awareness of relevant goals and quality expectations.

Leadership skills are demonstrated through the ability to manage activities and colleagues, make decisions, and motivate others, as well as to provide them with what is required to reach common goals in an efficient manner. The ability to manage groups of colleagues, to contribute to creating commitment and a good atmosphere at the workplace, and to manage conflicts constitutes further examples of such skills.

All qualifications must be documented so that they can be assessed regarding their quality as well as their scope.

About the Position

Fixed-term full-time position. Start date according to individual agreement. Placement: Uppsala. The person appointed is expected to carry out their main duties at the department in Uppsala. The position may include teaching on Campus Gotland.
