Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 90 persons are employed at the Department and approximately 1000 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.

The project
The project “The Role of Military Equipment in Peacekeeping Operations (ROMEO)” is funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship grant from the European Commission and headed by Dr. Evgenija Kröker. This project investigates when and how peacekeeping works, with a focus on how military equipment affects peace operations’ ability to reduce conflict-related violence, especially against civilians. Work Package 1 compiles and structures detailed data on the equipment used in 87 UN and non-UN peace operations in Sub-Saharan Africa (1991–2023), recording which countries provided which systems, in what quantities, and for which operational tasks. Work Package 2 uses this new dataset to build basic empirical knowledge on military peacekeeping equipment by examining its availability, suitability, modernity, and technical interoperability across missions, organizations, and time. Work Package 3 analyzes how equipment deficiencies shape the effectiveness of peace operations by statistically modeling their relationship with levels of conflict-related and civilian violence.

The department and the project is now looking for a teaching assistant for a 20% employment between 19th January - 30 June 2026.
