Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

Researcher in hydrology, with specialization in Surface Water Modelling

Are you interested in working with modelling of human-water interactions, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a research position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of Europe's most comprehensive earth science departments, with approximately 300 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; petrology, mineralogy and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge. For more information: Department of Earth Sciences

The researcher will be placed at Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences, Programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences (LUVAL).

Within the framework of a recently granted EU project (TRANSCEND), we are announcing a researcher position. The project aims to study and model the interactions between drought, water scarcity and society in a changing climate. Human societies strongly rely on access to water resources, which are essential to support livelihoods and provide favourable conditions for sustainable development. While benefiting from water services and struggling with drought and water scarcity, humans also alter the hydrological regime by building dams, canals, levees, etc.

Duties
The purpose of this project is to improve the modelling of human-water interactions, and simulating future dynamics emerging from the feedbacks between social and hydrological processes in European case studies (living labs).

Requirements
PhD degree in hydrology, environmental analysis, water resources engineering or similar studies is required or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Experience of work with hydrological extremes and surface water modelling is required.

Additional qualifications
Experience of work with (socio)hydrological observations and mathematical models are merits for this position.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of one year according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date January 2026 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
