Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.
The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. More information can be found on our website www.physics.uu.se.
Research area
The PhD students will perform theoretical investigations and computationally based modelling within condensed matter physics. Currently there is a strong focus on ultrafast out-of-equilibrium dynamics, laser-induced ultrafast spin dynamics and transport, simulations of superconductivity, generation of non-equilibrium orbital and spin currents, and theory for detection of phonons, magnons and orbital accumulation with electron beams in transmission electron microscopes.
Research tasks
The research tasks include the development of theoretical models and of computer simulation programs. The areas to which the PhD students can contribute are: quantum theory and modeling of light-induced spin and orbital currents, theory of laser-induced ultrafast spin dynamics and spin transport, theory for coupled out-of-equilibrium dynamics of electrons, magnons and phonons, theory of their detection in transmission electron microscope, and modeling of electrically induced magnetization dynamics in spintronic elements.
Various computer programs, like first-principles methods (DFT and TDDFT) and simulations of out-of-equilibrium dynamics will be used.
The candidates are offered the possibility to work in an exciting modern research area in condensed matter physics and will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with leading experimental and theoretical groups in Europe as well as industry.
Requirement qualifications
The prospective applicants are expected to have a strong interest in modern theoretical physics and to be strongly motivated. A required educational background is a master’s degree in theoretical or computational physics or in materials science, with very good knowledge of theoretical physics and of solid-state physics.
Additional qualifications
Excellent exam marks are considered an asset, as well as previous experience with condensed matter theory and/or experience with code development. Good communication skills both orally and in written English are desirable.
Application
The application should include a description of research interests and relevant experiences, CV, certificates of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of the Master thesis or outline of the Master’s thesis, published articles or relevant materials, if available. Applicants are asked to provide names of two reference persons for recommendation letters.
About the employment
The PhD position is a temporary position limited to four years in the case of full-time studies, according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 §§ 1-7, or 5 years, if additional teaching duties (maximum 20%) are included.
