The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focusing on cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently organized in six research programs: Cancer Precision Medicine, Cancer Immunotherapy, Genomics and Neurobiology, Molecular Tools and Functional Genomics, Neuro-Oncology and Neurodegeneration and Vascular Biology. Departmental activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Uppsala University Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in several education programs, including Master Programs, at the Faculty of Medicine. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 550 million, out of which about two thirds derive from external funding. IGP has approximately 400 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 850 affiliated staff members. BioVis is a Uppsala University, MedFarm core facility that for administrative reasons belong to the Dept. of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology. BioVis specializes in imaging technologies and hosts state-of- the-art instruments for Flow Cytometry (FC), Light Microscopy (LM), and Electron Microscopy (EM). We offer high-quality support to researchers mainly at Uppsala University, but extending to customers from Uppsala University Hospital, Swedish University of Agricultural Research, Swedish Veterinary Agency, and companies. The BioVis Platform is looking for a service-minded, proactive, and enthusiastic colleague to join as a Research Engineer focusing on Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting, with possible responsibilities extending towards Light Microscopy (LM).
Duties
• Deliver Expert Customer Support: Provide high-quality customer support by integrating technical and biological expertise with an understanding of diverse research applications.
• Execute Cell Sorting Services: Perform cell sorting procedures with precision and reliability, ensuring optimal outcomes for customers.
• Train and Educate Customers: Conduct instrument training through lectures and hands-on sessions, enabling customers to operate equipment independently and confidently.
• Teach Flow Cytometry: Contribute to Uppsala University’s academic programs by teaching Flow Cytometry in various courses.
• Maintain Laboratory Operations: Manage daily lab routines, perform standardizations, coordinate minor instrument repairs and liaise with Flow Cytometry vendors.
• Oversee Administrative Functions: Handle administrative duties, user access management, and scheduling of daily activities.
• Remain informed about emerging technologies and advancements in Flow Cytometry to continuously enhance service quality.
• Handling Instrument portfolio: Cytoflex LX, S and SRT, AriaIII
• Provide service at the two BioVis premises located at the Rudbeck Laboratory and the Uppsala Biomedical Centre (BMC), about 700 meters apart.
• Be a key person for the BioVis integration of spectral flow cytometry into its instrument portfolio in 2026
• Participate in BioVis plans to initiate small projects that involve staff in method development with research groups, feeding back into the BioVis service portfolio.
• To provide customer service and communication in English.
Requirements
• Educational Background: A Master’s degree or higher in a relevant scientific discipline.
• Technical Expertise: Demonstrated advanced proficiency in Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting, including sample preparation, panel design, compensation strategies, and data analysis using tools such as FlowJo. Experience with Spectral Flow Cytometry is highly desirable.
• Hands-On Experience: Prior work in a core facility or substantial hands-on experience operating and maintaining flow cytometers and cell sorters.
• Operational Agility: Proven ability to multitask effectively, managing multiple instruments and supporting several customers concurrently.
• Customer Engagement: Strong customer orientation with a proactive approach—able to anticipate user needs and provide relevant guidance without being prompted.
• Organizational Skills: Highly organized and detail-driven, capable of executing, documenting, and adapting workflows in a dynamic research environment.
• Communication & Training: Excellent interpersonal and teaching skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
• Genuine interest in learning and applying and new techniques and tools to improve and develop the facility portfolio
• Language Proficiency: Full professional fluency in both spoken and written English.
Additional qualifications
• A PhD degree.
• Knowledge about Light Microscopy.
• Basic Swedish skills for everyday communication. • Pedagogic education and experience
