Uppsala University, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University provides a broad international environment for research and teaching. Research at IMBIM) broadly spans the areas of biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, tumour biology, comparative genetics, functional genomics, immunology, bacteriology and virology. The research is essentially basic, but with relevance and application in health and disease in both animals and humans. More info: Research - Uppsala University

The Medical Inflammation Research (MIR) Group led by Prof. Rikard Holmdahl at the department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM), Uppsala University, aims to improve human health by identifying the regulatory pathways of autoimmune diseases.  A basis of this research some of the major genetic polymorphic alleles associated with autoimmune diseases in experimental animals have been identified and unique mouse strains developed.

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to lead and coordinate project “Pathogenic and regulatory anti-collagen antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis”. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading experts, access cutting-edge resources, and contribute to transformative discoveries that can shape the future of autoimmune disease treatment. The positions are for 2 years with eventual possibility to prolongation for another year.

Project description and duties

We are interested in uncovering the etiology and regulatory pathways underlying the development of autoimmune diseases. Using animal models, our goal is to dissect the pathogenic and regulatory mechanisms driving rheumatoid arthritis. In this project, we will investigate the origin and function of autoantibodies, their interaction with the synovial joint, and the factors that determine whether they exert protective or pathogenic effects.

As a postdoctoral fellow, you are expected to take a leading role in the entire research process, from research planning and project administration, data processing and analysis, to interpretation and dissemination of research findings. You will be working with immunology-oriented research including in vivo experiment, immune assays, single cell analysis and expression analysis. You are also expected to participate in the supervision of master students and teaching.

Qualifications and formal requirements

  • Doctoral degree in immunology, or a related field.
  • The Applicant must have advanced expertise in animal experimentation (including surgical procedures), flow cytometry, histology, and confocal microscopy
  • Research experience in mouse handling, mouse breeding and genotyping, surgical procedures, as well as experience with laboratory cellular biology work related to arthritis
  • Strong background in protein biochemistry, mainly recombinant protein expression, purification, and characterization, biostatistical analysis
  • Prior proficiency with Äkta systems, Luminex system, flow cytometry, antibody based immune assays will be considered valuable.
  • Proficient knowledge of English

We place great importance on personal suitability and are looking for highly creative and motivated employees who appreciate working in a team. We expect the applicant to show good cooperation skills and at the same time great independence.

To qualify for a Postdoctoral fellow position, candidates must possess a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is considered equivalent to a doctoral degree. Primarily, those who graduated no more than three years ago should be considered. When calculating the three-year time frame, the application deadline serves as the starting point, however, periods of e.g. parental or sick leave may be deducted from this three-year period.

Qualifications desired

A medical degree (MD) is considered advantageous
