Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology

UPPMAX (Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science, www.uppmax.uu.se) is a center with the mission to provide large-scale resources for computing and storage for researchers at Uppsala University and to offer support for them. To utilize the resources effectively, advanced user support with broad competence is provided. UPPMAX currently has about 1500 active users from various application areas where large-scale computations and storage of large datasets are necessary, such as bioinformatics and materials science, but also newer disciplines such as digital humanities. UPPMAX has around 20 employed system and application experts.

The application experts at UPPMAX form a broad group of approximately ten people who assist researchers in their utilization of large-scale computing and storage resources at UPPMAX and NAISS (National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden), participating in NAISS's national user support function.

This recruitment covers the Swedish node in the EuroHPC-funded network of European AI factories. The AI Factory Service Hub is managed as a project within the Horizon Europe program and will comprise up to 50 AI experts and other staff working closely with academic and industrial users in EuroHPC’s member states to promote AI solutions, training, business development, and knowledge transfer.

We are looking for an engaged and knowledgeable staff scientist in the field of artificial intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) with a focus on materials science, or alternatively, materials science with a focus on AI/ML (or equivalent). You will work closely with researchers, engineers, and other AI/ML experts within the framework of the Swedish node in the EuroHPC-funded project AI Factory Service Hub. Your mission will be to support and develop AI/ML solutions for advanced materials science applications, focusing on strengthening Swedish and European research and innovation.

Duties
The role will focus on supporting researchers in materials science more generally with managing data, software, tools, and support on the AI factory's computational resources, both nationally and at other European AI factories.

The work tasks will include among other things:

  • Helping researchers and engineers manage large-scale data.
  • Developing and implementing AI/ML methods (e.g., machine learning, deep learning) for materials science problems.
  • Collaborating with research groups to identify needs and opportunities for AI/ML support in their projects.
  • Contributing to the development of AI infrastructure and tools within the AI Factory Service Hub.
  • Participating in training initiatives, workshops, and knowledge transfer within academia.
  • Documenting and disseminating results in scientific publications and technical reports.

Staff scientists are offered the opportunity to allocate up to 20% of their time to develop professional and technical skills, both to stay current in their own scientific field and to broaden their knowledge and skills in other subjects.

Requirements
The person we are looking for should have a doctorate in a relevant field with good knowledge of data management and AI/ML methods, strong social skills, good collaboration abilities, and the capacity to take initiative. Furthermore, the person must be proficient in professional English both spoken and written. Good knowledge of Swedish is advantageous. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

The person we are looking for should have:

  • A doctorate in materials science, physics, chemistry, computer science, or a related field.
  • Documented work with methods for AI/ML applied in natural sciences or engineering.
  • Good programming skills (e.g., Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn).
  • Strong ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Good communication skills in English, both verbal and written.

Additional qualifications
It is considered advantageous if the candidate has documented experience in:

  • Working with high-performance computing (HPC) or EuroHPC environments.
  • AI/ML applications in material design, simulations, or experimental data analysis.
  • Large-scale data management (databases, data curation, metadata management, FAIR, etc.).
  • Collaboration with industrial actors or EU projects.
  • Teaching at the university level.

Other relevant technical or scientific expertise is also advantageous. We strive for a distribution of expertise among application experts across different subject areas and encourage applicants from all fields of study.
