Uppsala University, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences

Are you interested in working with gender-based violence with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a Lived experience research assistant on gender-based violence  position at Uppsala University.

The Child Health and Parenting (CHAP) research group, Department of Public Health and Health Care Sciences at Uppsala University, Sweden, is seeking a lived experience research assistant to join a project on gender-based violence. The position offers the opportunity for development in a supportive, interdisciplinary environment and is an excellent opportunity to further develop research skills and prepare for a career in academia, government or clinical research.

Description of the project
In a project funded by Forte, the research team has co-designed an advocacy intervention focused on gender-based violence delivered via open preschools. We are currently Theatre Testing the intervention materials and plan to pilot test the intervention next term. As part of the intervention, the open preschool staff receive training in gender-based violence, delivered by the National Centre for Men’s Violence Against Women (NCK). The project is grounded in a participatory approach, and we see lived experience as a form of expertise. Women with relevant lived experience have been involved in the project from conceptualisation, and we are now looking to recruit a lived experience research assistant to our team. Involving a research assistant with lived experience of gender-based violence helps ensure the research is relevant, respectful, and shaped by those it aims to support. Their insight will be vital in guiding how we engage with participants and interpret findings. Our research team has experience and has received training in how to work with lived experience team members and will be able to provide necessary training and support.

Duties
We are seeking a lived experience research assistant to:

  • Assist in analysing and writing up findings from the Theatre Testing phase.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of the staff training, including the administration and analysis of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.
  • Support the pilot study through assisting with data collection, including conducting observations and interviews with participating women.

Requirements

  • Lived experience of gender-based violence, with a desire to use that experience to support others and shape meaningful research.
  • Experience of drawing on personal experience and active listening skills to engage compassionately with others potentially affected by gender-based violence.
  • A Master’s degree (or near completion) in public health, psychology, or a related field.
  • Reliable, well-organised, and able to manage tasks independently and as part of a team.
  • Fluency in Swedish (spoken and written).
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).

Additional qualifications

  • Experience with qualitative research methods, such as conducting interviews or taking field notes.
  • Familiarity with quantitative research tools (e.g., questionnaires, surveys).
  • Comfort with basic data handling and documentation (e.g., transcription, coding, or analysis support).
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed research practice, particularly frameworks for trauma-informed involvement of people with experiences of gender-based violence.
  • Experience of being involved as a public contributor in research, such as participating in workshops or assisting with data collection.
