Uppsala University, Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering

Are you interested in working with research on applied hydrogen system, mainly towards the maritime sector supporting the transition to a fossil-free society, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a researcher position at Uppsala University.

At the Department of Civil Engineering and Industrial Technology, we have over four years built up a research environment around the use of hydrogen and its supply system, the research is primarily focused on shipping and its conversion to fossil-free, but applications in road transport and work machines are also studied. The work is carried out in close collaboration with other universities and research institutes as well as with industry.

The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consists of three divisions: Quality Science, Industrial Engineering and Management and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has approximately 100 employees and has its research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. This position will be located at the Division of Quality Science at Campus Gotland. For more information, see the web of the department

The Division of Quality Science works with both teaching and research and offers a wide range of programs and independent courses that are permeated by the goal of creating long-term sustainable companies and organizations. In the Division, several research projects, linked to sustainable development, are in progress. The Division also conducts research in quality sciences with a process and stakeholder focus. The division is located at Campus Gotland, an international campus in the middle of world heritage town Visby. Read more on the web of the division.

Duties
The duties involve participation in existing research projects and continued development of our research. The work involves participating in our existing research projects, work that takes place in close collaboration with other project members who are both within Uppsala University and at other universities and in industry. As our projects are mainly applied research, the work involves a lot of contacts with the outside world. The research group is under construction, which means that there are good opportunities to be involved and influence our operations.

Primarily, you will work in our research project focusing on hydrogen refueling, with the research conducted in close collaboration with other universities and research institutes as well as with industry. The case study for the project is Gotland’s ferry system and the operator Rederi AB Gotland is the main industrial sponsor of the project.

The project is divided into three phases. The first phase involves developing a conceptual solution to the large-scale hydrogen refueling challenge - delivering 16 tonnes of hydrogen within 45 minutes. The concept shall encompass all necessary port-side installations, including buffer storage, refueling stations, handling systems, and safety infrastructure. The proposed solution will be validated through calculations, thermodynamic simulations, risk identification studies, and other appropriate methodologies. This initial phase is scheduled for completion in 2026 and will be followed by an engineering phase and a final stage involving the construction of a pilot and demonstration system.

As a senior member in the research group you are expected to:

  • initiate, lead and contribute to all steps in the research process, including applications to external funders, planning and design of studies, formulation of research questions, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis as well as scientific articles and reports,
