The Department of Game Design is located at Uppsala University - Campus Gotland, an international campus situated in the heart of the UNESCO world Heritage city of Visby.

The Department of Game Design is part of the Faculty of Arts at Uppsala University. It conducts both high-level education and research. The Department educates approximately 450 full time equivalent students, about half of whom are international, and employs around 45 staff members across various roles. 

The department offers undergraduate and advanced-level education in game design and game development, including courses in graphics, project management and software engineering.

Duties
The position includes teaching, course coordination, course responsibility, examination, course development, and administrative tasks. Teaching is primarily conducted on campus and is offered within the Game Design programmes as well as in the department’s courses in the main field of Game Design, including courses related to level and sound design for games.

Teaching in the subject involves lecturing, conducting workshops, and supervising students and student groups to support them in realizing game ideas and acquiring knowledge in the field of game design. The position also includes collaboration with external stakeholders, as well as keeping up to date with developments in the subject area and societal developments relevant to the university’s activities. In addition, the holder of the position is expected to actively participate in the department’s internal development work and may be assigned duties such as programme coordinator or director of studies.

Regular presence at the workplace is required for active participation in the department’s activities.

Qualifications Required
To be eligible for the position, applicants must hold at least a Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject area. Documented teaching expertise, as well as relevant theoretical and practical knowledge of game design and game development, are required. Completion of at least ten weeks of higher education pedagogy training, or equivalent qualifications deemed comparable by the department, is also required. If special circumstances exist, the appointee may complete the required pedagogical training during the period of employment.
Applicants must have experience in the implementation and production of digital games in a commercial context, as well as experience in teaching and/or working with the game engines Unity and Unreal. Experience in working with sound design in a game engine is also required.
The applicant must possess the personal qualities necessary to perform the duties of the position well: the ability to collaborate effectively with others, take initiative, assume responsibility for individual tasks, and work in a structured manner by planning, organizing, and prioritizing work efficiently while adhering to set deadlines. Experience with project-oriented work in game design and game development, as well as strong communication skills in spoken and written English, are essential.

The ability to teach in English is a requirement.

Additional Qualifications (Meritorious)
Documented experience in teaching or working with:

  • Implementation or production of games in a commercial context, game design, and/or experience with the game engines Unity and Unreal.
  • Additional expertise in game development, such as agile methodologies, sound design for game environments, and having taken digital games from concept to market.

Experience in personal artistic practice and/or active engagement within the games sector is also considered a merit.

About the Position
This is a permanent position. A probationary period may apply. The position is full-time (100%). Starting date: 1 August 2025 or as agreed. Individual salary placement is applied.
