About us
The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical department with around 250 employees and more than 900 affiliates through Uppsala University Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a wide range of areas. The research takes place in close connection with the clinical operations at the hospital and includes both fundamental studies on disease mechanisms and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatments. You will join an interdisciplinary research group with extensive experience in mass spectrometry, bioinformatics, biostatistics, and AI. The group has a strong publication record, with recent research published in journals such as Nature Communications, BMC Medicine och npj Digital Medicine (2025). Duties

As a researcher, you will:

  • Develop and implement advanced LC-HRMS methods (both targeted and untargeted)
  • Maintain instrumentation and manage lab operations
  • Design sample preparation strategies for various biological matrices, primarily related to gut microbiota and environmental exposure
  • Analyze biological samples from large population cohorts
  • Contribute to scientific publications and present results at seminars and conferences
  • Teach (up to 20%) in analytical chemistry and bioanalysis

Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or another relevant field, or equivalent experience considered relevant
  • Documented experience with HPLC and high-resolution mass spectrometry
  • Experience in method development within metabolomics or related areas
  • Experience with analysis of biological matrices such as blood, cells, or similar
  • Skills in identifying biomarkers and interpreting mass spectrometry data
  • Excellent command of English, both spoken and written
  • Ability to work independently, while also thriving in a collaborative team environment

Meriting:

  • Experience with other mass spectrometric techniques (e.g., triple quadrupole instruments)
  • Experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry based on Orbitrap technology
  • Knowledge in microbiota-related metabolite analysis
  • Previous supervision of students or junior researchers
  • Teaching experience in analytical chemistry or bioanalysis
  • Good knowledge of Swedish, particularly valuable when collaborating with clinical operations
  • Recommendations from previous supervisors or postdoctoral mentors

About the position
