Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 90 persons are employed at the Department and approximately 1000 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.

The Department is now looking for a research assistant working fulltime for 12 months, starting in June 2025. The research assistant will during this period work in two research projects:

Fate of Female Fighters (Project leader Erika Forsberg)
The research assistant will be assisting the project leader in all parts of the project. This includes e.g. to (a) collect, systematize, and code data on the fate of female ex-combatants post-conflict (b) contribute to background work for Nepal case study (c) collect and review relevant literature on the project theme and relevant cases (d) contribute to application for ethical approval (e) participate in project meetings and offer guidance to interns.

The Politics of Protection (Project leader Lisa Hultman)
This project explores variations in international responses to atrocities, with funding from the Swedish Research Council and Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The research assistant will assist the PI in completing this research project. It will entail data management, analysis, assistance on finalizing article manuscripts, summarizing findings for a wider audience, and other tasks to support the project.

Requirements

  • Master degree in Peace and Conflict Studies, or equivalent (it is sufficient to have a degree at the time of taking up the position)
  • Previous experience of being a research assistant or research intern with similar tasks
  • Prior experience, and/or demonstrated interest in the project areas (gender dimensions of peace and conflict, international interventions, and violence against civilians)
  • Proficiency in academic English (reading and writing)
  • Data management skills
  • Ability to assess, manage and structure large amounts of information effectively
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Systematic and rigorous in the daily work and a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Good interpersonal skills.
