Uppsala University hereby declares a postdoctoral position in Materials Physics, at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, to be open for application.
The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over nine divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, around 100 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

The research within the division of Materials Physics, at Uppsala University, is centred around understanding the physical properties of materials by analysing their structure and composition across multiple length scales, from the atomic to the macroscopic, and linking them to functional properties. Core areas are magnetism, hydrogen, energy materials, soft matter and ion-solid interactions.

Duties
The project where the succesful candidate will work concerns experimental investigations of candidate materials and heterostructures for magneto-ionic applications based on amorphous rare earth-transition metal compounds. The research work will involve thin-film deposition, structural characterization, static and dynamic magnetic characterization, investigations of transport and/or magnetization reversal characteristics, and the effects on magnetic properties when introducing ions. The in-house laboratory facilities available to the Materials Physics division provide resources for conducting the entire chain of experiments in Uppsala, excluding only techniques demanding synchrotron or neutron scattering, which will require travelling to large facilities in Sweden and abroad. Responsibility for maintenance of experimental setups in the labs, as well as supervision of e.g. BSc or MSc thesis projects, may be part of the duties. Teaching on courses may be included to a limited extent.
Requirements
PhD degree in physics or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in physics. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the deadline for applications. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
Extensive experience in independent use of experimental techniques for ultra-high-vacuum-based thin film deposition (e.g. magnetron sputtering), structural characterization (e.g. x-ray diffraction and reflectivity) as well as magneto-optical characterization methods including domain imaging is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required, as well as a good ability to analyse and present experimental data.
Additional qualifications
Experiences with micromagnetic simulations, SQUID or VSM magnetometry, ion implantation, chemical analysis with ion-beam methods, and investigations of materials systems of relevance for spintronics applications are all considered advantageous.
About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date 2025-09-01 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
