Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Are you interested in working with modern electronic structure methods and numerical simulations of magnetic phenomena using supercomputers as well as with software development, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.

Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international position. The ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance in order to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important asset is all the individuals who, with their curiosity and commitment, make Uppsala University one of the country's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has roughly 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of approximately SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of Uppsala University's largest with nearly 400 employees, of which approx. 125 are PhD students. The department conducts world-class research and education in both theoretical and experimental physics and has extensive collaboration with the outside world. The research is carried out at 10 research departments and touches everything from the unimaginably small to the large within, for example, energy supply, climate development, new materials and the universe. This entire spectrum is also reflected in the department's courses and educational programs. Each year, around 2,500 students study courses at basic and advanced level at the department. Duties

The research in this project will include performing numerical calculations and simulations of different materials on supercomputers, analysis of obtained results and their presentation at international conferences and workshops as well as the writing of corresponding manuscripts. The scope of studied systems includes transition metal and potentially rare-earth compounds where the phenomena of interest are the spin-lattice coupling effects and spin- or charge-density waves. The postdoc’s work will be focused on obtaining detailed and accurate information about how the crystal structure affects the magnetic properties, and this information will be further used by other researchers in the group. Also, the postdoc will work on implementing the generalized susceptibility calculation in the electronic structure software RSPt, using which the density wave instabilities can be predicted for any given system. Extensive testing and numerical calculations for concrete systems will be also done by the postdoc.

Requirements
PhD degree in physics or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in physics. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Good communication skills in English are required.

Additional qualifications
Good knowledge of solid state physics and electronic structure theory are preferred, as well as experience in software development in Python or Fortran programming languages and capacity to work efficiently with supercomputers and in a research team.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of two years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date 1 April or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala

For further information about the position, please contact: Prof. Dr. Olle Eriksson, 0704250777, olle.eriksson@physics.uu.se or Dr.Vladislav Borisov, 0764444941, vladislav.borisov@physics.uu.se

Please submit your application by 19 March 2025, UFV-PA 2025/558.
