Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website: (https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom/?languageId=1).

Photo- and electrochemical water splitting
The project integrates spectroscopy, electrochemistry, photochemistry and coordination chemistry. It focuses on the preparation of inorganic compounds, their characterization using physical methods and their application in redox catalysis. At the next step, it will include the development of photoactive electrode materials for solar energy conversion. Some aspects of the work will be carried out in collaboration with the department colleagues, partner institutions, and synchrotron facilities.

Duties
The PhD student will perform synthesis of metal complexes, their chemical and spectroscopic characterization, investigation of their redox properties and activity in photo- and electrocatalysis, preparation of photoactive electrodes and their investigation in water oxidation reaction. The PhD student will write research reports and publications and present their research results at internal meetings, national and international conferences. The project may include secondments to partner institutions within Europe in the framework of the Horizon Europe project. The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to the research studies which includes participating in the research project and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Requirements
The candidate must have obtained a necessary qualification (see the qualification requirements below) by the time when the employment starts. The degree in Chemistry or related field (e.g., Natural Science, Physics) is required.

The candidate must have:

  • been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development. A strong motivation to conduct research in the field of inorganic chemistry with the aim to obtain a PhD degree will be also taken into account.

Additional qualifications
Experience in catalysis and/or electrochemistry and/or spectroscopy methods is not required, but will be considered an advantage. Good knowledge of metalorganic chemistry and experience in synthesis of coordination compounds are also seen advantageous.
