The Department of Immunology, Genetics, and Pathology at Uppsala University conducts extensive research focusing on cancer, genetic disorders, and autoimmune diseases. A central aim of the department is to promote translational research, fostering collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research activities are organized into six key programs: Cancer Precision Medicine, Cancer Immunotherapy, Genomics and Neurobiology, Molecular Tools and Functional Genomics, Neuro-Oncology and Neurodegeneration, and Vascular Biology. Parts of the department's work are integrated with the clinical departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Akademiska Hospital. The department is also responsible for education within various academic programs, standalone courses, and international master’s programs within the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science and Technology. The department's annual budget is approximately SEK 550 million, with about two-thirds derived from external research grants. It employs about 400 people, including 100 doctoral students, and involves over 850 staff members in total. Duties:
We are seeking two (2) research assistants to support genetic and pharmacological screening projects within our team. The responsibilities include large-scale cell culture in 2D and 3D, cell transduction, Cas9 activity measurement, lentivirus preparation, flow cytometry/FACS, imaging, and drug effect analysis. - The first assistant position will focus on genetic screening using CRISPR to understand plasticity in brain cancer. - The second assistant position will focus on organoid-on-chip systems as part of the CNSx3 initiative, aimed at enabling screening in collaboration with teams at the Rudbeck Laboratory, specifically Wojciech Michno's, Peetra Magnusson's, and Fredrik Swartling's groups. We are looking for candidates with strong teamwork skills, attention to detail, and an ability to work with cells in a research-intensive environment. Evaluation will be carried out in consultation with experts in CRISPR, interdisciplinary cancer research, and organoid/lab-on-chip systems. The focus of the work will be on performing and refining routine processes for stable and large-scale cultivation of iPS cells to produce brain and vascularized organoids/lab-on-chip. We are looking for someone who is meticulous, has extensive experience working with cell cultures (cancer cells, primary cells, stem cells), and thrives in a research-intensive environment. These positions provide a strong foundation for a career in interdisciplinary CNS research, and the potential for long-term contribution to the department will be an important assessment criterion.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree or equivalent in molecular biology, biomedicine, or related fields. - Strong practical laboratory skills relevant to 2D and 3D cell culture and advanced molecular biology experiments. - Proficiency in fundamental molecular biology techniques. - Solid theoretical knowledge in CRISPR, cell biology, neurobiology, and cancer. - Good command of spoken and written English. - Basic knowledge of statistics. - Excellent collaboration skills.
Meriting:
- Specific experience with organoid culture or lab-on-chip systems.
- Specific experience working with lentiviral vectors.
- Experience with advanced or automated microscopy.
- Specific experience with advanced data analysis in R, Matlab, or similar.
- Experience with screening projects.
- Experience with laboratory organization.
