Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website. (https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom/?languageId=1).

Subject Description:
Photoredox catalysis using plasmonic systems is a rapidly advancing field that enables precise control over chemical transformations through light-matter interactions. This project focuses on utilizing plasmonic materials to drive reactions mediated by proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanisms. The work involves designing and synthesizing nanostructured plasmonic systems, characterizing their catalytic and photophysical properties, and applying them to perform targeted PCET reactions under light irradiation. The goal is to advance our understanding of the interplay between plasmonics and photoredox catalysis, opening pathways for novel reaction mechanisms and sustainable chemical processes.

Duties

  • Synthesis and Modification of Nanomaterials: Design, preparation, and functionalization of nanomaterials tailored for photoredox catalysis and related applications.
  • Catalytic Testing and Product Analysis: Perform catalytic experiments to evaluate the efficiency and selectivity of nanomaterial systems, including analysis of reaction products using advanced characterization techniques.
  • Advanced Spectroscopic Studies: Conduct in-depth spectroscopic investigations to study the photophysical and catalytic properties of plasmonic nanomaterials and their role in proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes.
  • Data Analysis: Process and interpret experimental data, applying statistical and computational tools to derive meaningful insights and support hypothesis-driven research.
  • Documentation and Operational Procedures: Maintain detailed records of experimental developments and outcomes, and draft comprehensive operational protocols to ensure reproducibility and scalability

Requirements

  • bachelor's degree in chemistry or physics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in organic synthesis and characterization, including proficiency with optical and NMR techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with ultrafast spectroscopy and its application to chemical or material systems.
  • Proven ability to independently operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
  • Proficiency in utilizing and modifying open-source programming languages, particularly Python.
  • Excellent command of English, both spoken and written, for effective communication and documentation in a professional scientific environment.

Significant weight will also be placed on personal suitability. Consideration will be given to good collaborative skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant’s background and skills complement and strengthen the research within the department and contribute to its future development.
