Uppsala University, Department of Electrical Engineering

Uppsala University’s tenure track system grants assistant professors the possibility to be assessed for promotion to the position as associate professor. The university provides support in various areas, such as scientific and educational development, leadership development as well as patent and innovation support.

Electrification and digitalisation are among the largest areas for the future in the conversion to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in the areas - renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, next generation communication networks, and wireless sensor networks as well as smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 130 employees that all contribute to a thriving research environment in diverse areas in the Ångström Laboratory.

The position will be at the division of Signals and Systems at the Department of Electrical
Engineering.
The division of Signals and Systems specializes in research in signal processing, control theory, wireless communications and networks, robotics and machine learning.

Description of subject area of the employment:
While commercial deployment of 5G networks have started in many parts of the world, the research focus in the wireless communications and networks community has moved on to the next generation of networks, the so-called 6G networks. Applicants for this position are expected to have a strong research background compatible with the broad vision and challenges of future generation wireless communications and networks. In particular, relevant research areas include, but are not limited to (i) new technologies for highly reliable machine-to-machine communication with very low latency requirements, (ii)  energy efficient massive Internet of Things (IoT) networks, (iii) security and privacy in next generation networks, (iv) artificial intelligence and machine learning for and over wireless networks, (v) novel technologies for increasing connectivity and coverage (e.g. integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks), and (vi) applications to connected autonomous systems over edge-cloud computing architecture, intelligent transportation systems, smart factories etc.

Duties:

  • Teaching, research and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility and course administration and supervision of second- and third-cycle students. The position holder is expected to develop the department’s research and education within the area next generation wireless communication systems, and to build collaboration with relevant industrial parties.

  • Follow developments within the subject area and the development of society in general that is important for the work at the university.

  • The position may include participation in some of the different research projects of the division within the areas Intelligent Systems, Signal Processing, Wireless Communications, and Automatic Control, as well as participating in the applications of external research funding and after some time, develop the capacity to attract external grants for his/her own research. The holder is expected to take part in and lead research projects together with relevant industrial partners.

  • The holder is also expected to contribute to teaching activities within the department and is expected to teach courses that may be outside the holder 's specific areas of expertise. Examples of such courses are electronics and digital technology, signals and systems, signal processing and control technology.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking of applicants that fulfil the above-mentioned qualifications required
The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, of which weight will be primarily given to research expertise.

Research Expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and teaching. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to research merits in areas compatible with next generation wireless communications and networks, e.g. new technologies for maximizing data rate and spectral efficiency, achieving massive machine-to-machine communications with high reliability and very low latency, integration of terrestrial and satellite communication technologies, security and privacy aspects of next generation networks, energy-efficiency and sustainability of massive IoT networks, and future applications of next generation networks.

Experience from collaboration with industrial partners and taking part in or leading research projects is considered an important merit as well experience from conducting research and studies abroad. Experience from international research collaborations, is also considered a merit.

Teaching Expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration.

In assessing teaching expertise, experience of developing and implementing courses for both large and small student groups will be considered a merit. The Division of Signals and Systems is responsible for a large number of courses in the areas of Signal Processing, signals and systems, Wireless Communication, Automatic Control, Electronics and Embedded Measuring System within undergraduate program and master's programs. Teaching experience in these areas is therefore considered a merit.

All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.

In filling this position the university aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.
