The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad researchprofile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamentalidea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between
medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical andclinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro biology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units forOncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics atAkademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several educationprogrammes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domainof Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out ofwhich more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people.Feel free to read more about the department's activities here:

Prof. Peetra Magnusson at Uppsala University, Dept. ofImmunology, Genetics and Pathology, the Vascular Biology research program. Research in the labfocuses on diseases specifically affecting the brain vasculature including cavernomas. The selectedcandidate will join an exciting PhD project that aims to investigate and prepare genetically engineeredcomplex in vitro cellular structures involving vascularized models of the brain, also utilizingmicrofluidics.
In this project you will work with novel models of vascular biology to simulate the human situation inhealth and disease. Key methodologies in the project include; cell culture of primary cells and stem cells, molecular bioengineering and pharmacological screening to find new therapies for vascular diseaseslacking pharmaceutical treatments.
You will work in in a dynamic, international and multidisciplinary team including close collaborationswith clinicians and pharmaceutical, biotech companies in translational projects. Additionally, you willjoin the recently established interdisciplinary center, CNSx3, which brings together leading researchgroups from Uppsala, Linköping, and Gothenburg University, as well as Chalmers University ofTechnology. This offers you the opportunity to contribute to and grow within an expanding andinnovative research environment.
The successful candidate will devote most of the time towards his/her research level education.
Further information on the activity of the research group and the CNSx3 center can be assessed at: https://www.uu.se/en/department/immunology-genetics-and-pathology/research/vascular-biology/peetra-magnusson
As a PhD student, you will combine research with coursework, teaching, and participation in various scientific activities. Other service activities within the department, e.g. education and administrative work can be included within the framework of the employment (maximum 20%). The position providesan excellent foundation for a future career in advanced vascular biology research and therapeuticdevelopment.
