The Department
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.

The project
There is currently a lack of studies investigating universities as sites of violent mobilization. The purpose of this project is to explain under what conditions university based organized violence is most likely to erupt. To address this purpose, the project collects and analyses novel data on the prevalence of organized violence across African universities (1989-2021). We will combine this with a in-depth comparison of two universities in West Africa. Project leader is Anders Themnér.

Duties
The department and the project, seeks to hire a researcher to work on understanding the causes and dynamics of organized violence at university campuses and involving university students in Africa. Together with other researchers in the team, the recruited researcher will work on describing geographical and temporal variation in student violence, and how it is similar or different to other forms of organized violence. Based on a novel dataset on university violence events, the researcher will analyze the causes of student violence using state-of-the-art methods. The researcher will contribute to data management, data visualization, and data analysis, as well as crafting original manuscripts on the topic. Some administrative duties might apply. The position may entail teaching at the undergraduate- and/or graduate-levels, up to 20% of the successful applicant’s work-time.

Requirements
At the time when starting the position, the successful candidate should have a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies or another closely related field. Documented experience working with advanced quantitative methods, in particular from multi-level statistical modeling, geospatial data management and analysis, and causal inference. Experience from researching political violence in Africa is a requirement. Advanced proficiency in written English is also required.

Additional qualifications
Peer-reviewed publications. Expertise in applied machine-learning techniques for forecasting and simulation.
