Postdoctoral position in cellular metabolism

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has more than 110 employees, of which about 25 are doctoral students, 10 postdoctoral fellows, and 40 researchers, teachers and professors.

The research group of Peter Bergsten at the Department of Medical Cell Biology (https://www.uu.se/en/contact-and-organisation/staff?query=N96-2950) works to increase the understanding of underlying causes of obesity and related complications. To achieve this, a translational approach is taken. Peter Bergsten works in different aspects of the disease, from cell to society. The research extends from experimental work on cellular mechanisms, via our clinical cohort (ULSCO), to preventative work on a societal level.

Duties

We are now looking for a qualified and motivated postdoctoral researcher who will primarily focus on increasing our understanding of cellular metabolic aspects of some of the new drugs used to treat obesity. The work focuses on dissecting obesity-related alterations in insulin secretion, primarily using isolated human pancreatic islets, but also alpha- and beta cell lines. Methods include islet perifusion, islet metabolism (Seahorse extracellular flux analyzer), immune staining, expression of selected genes at transcript (real time PCR) and protein (Western Blot) levels as well as work with large proteomic-, metabolomic-, and mRNA-sequencing datasets.

Requirements
PhD degree in medicine or pther relevant subject or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in these. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We are looking for a motivated candidate with a robust background in cellular, experimental work in metabolism. The successful applicant has broad experience from such work in a preclinical setting. The applicant must be proficient in the English language, speech and writing, and have at least one published first-author article in a well-renowned scientific journal within the field. You are expected to be able to work independently, but also actively cooperate with other members of the group. The applicant is further expected to take part in supervising new group members and students.

Additional qualifications
Experience from work on functional studies of general metabolism both in vitro and in vivo is desirable. Personal qualifications will be of great significance in the evaluation process.

The application should contain a brief description of research interests and relevant experiences, CV, copies of diplomas and transcripts, and the applicant’s thesis (or a draft). Please also submit letters of reference or contact information of previous research supervisors.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of two years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
