Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Temporary employment for 6 months with access 2024-12-01

Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international position, conducting research and education of the highest quality, and collaborating with society in various ways. Our most important asset is all the individuals who, with their curiosity and commitment, make Uppsala University one of the country's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 46,000 students, 7,300 employees and a turnover of SEK 7.3 billion.

The Department of Solid State Physics (FTF) is part of the Department of Materials Science at the Ångström Laboratory. At the department, we work with both basic and applied research of a mainly experimental nature to meet needs and answer questions in primarily the energy and environmental field, but also within life science. Notably, we investigate the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials and new materials that can be used in chromogenic technologies, solar cells, heterogeneous (photo)catalysis, gas sensors, magnetism, spintronics, and biomagnetic applications.

Project description
The work is carried out within the framework of a European m-ERA.NET co-fund project SanFlex, where the Uppsala group is synthesizing superacid functionalized photocatalytic metal oxide coatings and characterizing their physicochemical and antimicrobial properties.

Tasks
Synthesize superacid photocatalytic nanomaterials using physical vapor deposition and wet chemical techniques, in particular sol-gel methods. The tasks include materials characterization using X-ray diffraction, surface area and porosity measurements, surface chemical acid-base titration and surface charge analysis, photocatalytic measurements, and evaluation of antimicrobial properties.

Qualifications
PhD degree in chemistry with specialization in inorganic chemistry or materials chemistry, or a closely related field.

Documented knowledge and research experience in nanomaterials synthesis, especially sol-gel and hydrothermal synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and synthesis and analysis of photocatalytic, antimicrobial and/or self-cleaning coatings.

We require good oral and written skills in English.

Personal qualities such as good collaboration and communication skills are very important. You must be purposeful, structured and be able to work effectively both individually and in groups. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
