Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

Project coordinator for the Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science (CNDS) and the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes)

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden´s largest and most versatile department of its kind. We are approximately 280 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; petrology, mineralogy and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge.

This research program is divided into three main areas: air (atmosphere), water (hydrosphere), and landscape (crust). We study weather and climate and the effects of climate change; water and environmental pollution; and glaciology and the processes that shape the Earth's surface. Our research takes place both in the field and in laboratories and much of our research revolves around climate issues. Read more here: Air, water and landscape sciences.

You will work as project coordinator for the Centre for Natural Disaster Studies (CNDS) and the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes). CNDS is a national knowledge platform for research on the nexus between natural hazards and social vulnerability with active researchers from Uppsala University, the Swedish Defence University and Karlstad University. Climes is at the core of a prolific interdisciplinary scientific community focussing on climate extremes and their impacts, and coordinates a lively series of meetings, international exchanges and training events. It is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Lund University and RISE, and was inaugurated in early 2024. You can find more information on both centres at: www.cnds.se and www.climes.se.

Duties
As part of the position, you will administer the centres’ activities and identify needs for work efforts to achieve their goals. Together with the management teams, you will be responsible for overall follow-up of the centres´ initiatives, planning and implementation of scientific conferences and events linked to research training and cross-sectorial collaborations, as well as work with various types of internal and external reporting. Furthermore, the position includes organising and, if necessary, participating in CNDS’ and climes’ internal and external meetings, as well as working with the centres’ websites and social media. The position may involve travel within and outside of Sweden.

Requirements
Second-cycle university education. Well-documented experience of administrative work, including documented experience of work with web publishing and text production and of arranging scientific meetings. In addition, very good skills in both written and spoken Swedish and English are required.

Additional qualifications
Second-cycle university degree in a topic of relevance to the scientific subjects covered by the centres, such as climate science, environmental science, hydrology, natural hazards or similar is a merit. We value experience of working in international research and/or in cross-sectorial environments. It is good if you have the ability to overview and prioritize multiple tasks. Being structured and finding varied work stimulating is an asset. It is an advantage to be open to a very wide network of contacts in research and the private and public sectors and be able to collaborate easily, as well as if you are a good self-driven problem solver, have good organizational and communication skills and a results-oriented approach. It is good if you are an experienced writer, with the ability to break down complex information into understandable text and communicate it in both Swedish and English to different audiences. Great importance will be attached to personal qualities. Previous experience in the administration of large projects or research centres, as well as experience in researcher training, will be evaluated positively.
