Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

Are you interested in working with bioinformatics analysis, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favorable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a Bioinformatician position at Uppsala University.

National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS; https://nbis.se) is a large national infrastructure in rapid development providing support, tools and training to the Swedish life science research community. NBIS constitutes the bioinformatics platform at SciLifeLab (https://www.scilifelab.se), a national resource that provides advanced technologies and technical know-how in molecular biosciences. NBIS is also the Swedish node in the European infrastructure ELIXIR for biological information.

We are now, during a limited time, strengthening our capacity in our support team for Health and Clinical research support. One time-limited position will be affiliated with the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Uppsala University. The successful applicants will be integrated in a vibrant bioinformatics team in an exciting research environment and will have many opportunities to further improve current skills and develop new skills to keep up with bioinformatics challenges as they emerge.

Duties
We are looking for an expert that will participate primarily in bioinformatics analysis of human transcriptomics and genomics data in a wide range of studies related to the medicine and health field, but also other research fields. The work involves supporting Swedish researchers in this field under a “user fee-based” support model. The projects will differ in complexity and length and will have a variety of medical and clinical aims.

Responsibilities include planning, initiating and executing bioinformatics analyses, communication with research groups, staying aware of current developments in the field, and writing and communicating results and reports. NBIS experts are also regularly involved in advanced bioinformatics training for the Swedish research community. Regular internal meetings and training opportunities will be part of the work. NBIS also gives time for professional development and the opportunity to learn from a diverse team of NBIS colleagues.

The work will include a certain amount of travel to other Swedish universities, as knowledge exchange is a key aspect of our operation and development, to maintain cutting-edge expertise for analysis of current and emerging data types.

Requirements
Required qualifications for the position are that the applicant has:

  • A PhD in bioinformatics, molecular medicine or related subjects the employer considers of relevance to the position.
  • Post doc experience in working with advanced bioinformatics analyses of omics data from high throughput technologies.
  • Considerable experience (10+ years) in analyzing transcriptomics data, genetic association studies, and Illumina and Nanopore whole genome-, methylation, and RNA sequencing data, including pre-processing, statistical analyses, selection and visualization.
  • Documented experience (5+ years) of working with inflammatory and infectious disease.
  • Experience (5+ years) of independently driving support projects and performing data analysis and scientific interpretation based on omics data at an internationally competitive level.
  • Proficiency in a scripting language like R or Python, of working with bioinformatics pipelines particularly Nextflow,  as well as ability to work efficiently in a Linux command-line environment and on high performance computer clusters.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English are required as is ability to collaborate with scientists of very different backgrounds.
  • Experience of working in a collaborative, yet service-minded environment.
  • A willingness to learn new methods and an ability to acquire new skills.

Additional qualifications

  • Knowledge transfer is a central concept for us and supervision experience is strongly meriting.
  • Experience of autoimmune diseases is further meriting.
  • “Reproducible research” and “FAIR data” are central concepts to us, and experience of relevant tools and methods is meriting.
