Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

Are you interested in working with functional materials for metals extraction and separation, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a researcher position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden´s largest and most versatile department of its kind. We are approximately 280 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; petrology, mineralogy and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge.

This research program is divided into three main areas: air (atmosphere), water (hydrosphere), and landscape (crust). We study weather and climate and the effects of climate change; water and environmental pollution; and glaciology and the processes that shape the Earth's surface. Our research takes place both in the field and in laboratories and much of our research revolves around climate issues. Read more here: Air, water and landscape sciences

Duties

The work duties include synthesis and characterization (e.g., thermal analysis, spectroscopy, chromatography, electron microscopy) of biopolymer- and mineral-based materials; functionalization of surface by chemical modification with functional groups and/or functional ligands; testing of materials for sorption-related applications that are within our current research areas.

In addition to research, some participation in the supervision of doctoral students, master"s students and project students, as well as communication of research results through scientific articles in well-established scientific journals and presentations at international conferences, are also included as important aspects of the employment. Some participation in teaching may also be included. You are also expected to contribute to applications for external research funds.

Requirements

To qualify for employment as a researcher, you must have a doctoral degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. This position requires a Doctoral degree in Organic Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, or similar, or a degree equivalent to these. We also require documented knowledge and experience in synthesizing functional materials for metals complexation and materials characterization techniques (NMR, SEC, IR).

We attach great importance to your personal qualities and you must be self-motivated, have the ability to lead and run projects and be able to collaborate with other researchers. It is important that you are pedagogical, structured and that you can work effectively both individually and in a group.
