The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro biology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 500 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people. Duties
A PhD student position is available in the laboratory of Lars Forsberg at Uppsala University, Dept. of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology. We are primarily looking for a highly motivated individual with interest in molecular cellbiology and experimental techniques. Extraordinary students with other interests and background are also welcome to apply.

The research group is focused on studies of detrimental health consequences linked with mosaic loss of chromosome Y (LOY) in men. We have established that men affected with this somatic mutation in blood cells have an increased risk for death and various common disease, which helps explain why men live shorter lives than women. We are now building on these results, to further investigate associations between LOY and disease risks, as well as unraveling mechanisms to explain how and why LOY in immune cells is linked with disease processes in other organs. The projects are performed on many levels using various types of omics-data generated within the group and with collaborators, as well as using online databases and cohorts. The PhD student will devote most of the time towards his/her research level education. Other service activities within the department, e.g. education and administrative work can be included within the framework of the employment (maximum 20%). The position will be extended with the time devoted to teaching to allow four years of full time graduate studies.

Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

• hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in relevant area such as molecular medicine, genetics, or a related field
• have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits,
• or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way. 

For the current position, experience with molecular-, microscopic- and cell culture-techniques such as, qPCR, transfection, CRISPR-Cas system, immunohistochemistry, FISH, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, stem cell culture and maintenance, and sequencing techniques is a requirement.

Additional qualifications
Within the group, many projects are planned and carried out jointly, which is why personal qualities and ability to work together are of great importance. You are also driven and can work independently, flexibly and solution oriented. Since we work in an international environment, a requirement is that you can express yourself well in spoken and written English. The application should include a CV, copies of degrees, contact details of two references and a short description of the applicant and his/her previous research experience. Letters(s) of recommendation may be included. If the applicant has published scientific papers they can also be included.
