Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry - BMC

Postdoctoral position in Chemistry with specialization in Analytical Chemistry with focus on single-cell mass spectrometry

Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies. You can find more information about us here.

Project description: The position is part of an ERC funded project for mass spectrometric analysis of single-cells and metabolic pathway elucidation. The project will be conducted in the Lanekoff group within the research program for analytical chemistry. The group’s research is focused on innovative mass spectrometry solutions for metabolomics and lipidomics of biological samples, including mass spectrometry imaging, direct infusion, isomeric characterization, and surface sampling capillary electrophoresis.

Duties
The successful candidate will work with the team on mass spectrometric data collection and data handling to reveal metabolic pathway alterations in individual cells relevant to type 2 diabetes. As a postdoctoral researcher you will collaborate with PhD students, undergraduate students and researchers both within the group and interdisciplinarily with other groups. You will also write scientific reports..

Requirements
PhD degree in natural or technical sciences or a foreign degree equivalent to such a PhD degree. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as good collaborative skills, motivation and independence, as well as how the applicant through their experience and competence is judged to have the abilities necessary to develop within the project.

Additional qualifications
Experience with running mass spectrometry is beneficial, especially with a metabolite focus. Analysis of data based on mass spectrometry and PCR for metabolic pathway analysis is advantageous. Experience of cell handling, statistics, programming, pathway analysis and scientific writing is beneficial. Scores from IELTS or TOEFL are desirable but not mandatory at the time of applying.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date 2025-01-02 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
