Uppsala University, Department of Organismal Biology

Are you interested in working with novel methods to study reproductive physiology in males, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.

The NORDFERTIL Research Lab Uppsala, is located at the Department of Organismal Biology. The Department teaches and explores the evolution, development and function on the organismal level. For more information see http://www.iob.uu.se.

At the program of physiology and environmental toxicology, we are using molecular tools and experimental models to investigate how cellular and molecular mechanisms affect the physiology and toxic responses of the whole organism in animals, human cells, microbes and photosynthetic organisms.

The selected candidate for the position will have the opportunity to use a large number of advanced technology platforms offered in the region by SciLifeLab  https://www.scilifelab.se/services#servicesoverview, as well as a unique sample collection of testicular tissue of several species. Furthermore, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to be part of a international network focusing on fertility preservation in males.

Duties
We are looking for one temporary position to work primarily on histological, cell culture as well as molecular biology methods related to male gonadal development in humans. The research projects will be related to the ongoing fertility preservation project NORDFERTIL and therefore include basic biological aspects with a direct connection to the clinic. Effects on human gonadal physiology of currently used anti-cancer treatment protocols as well as those planned for future use and currently tested in animal models, will be explored with basic and cutting-edge methodologies, such as:

  •  Basic and cutting-edge culture methods using human and animal tissue or cells samples (e.g., microfluidics, organoids, organ-on-chip assays).
  •  Basic and cutting-edge methods for protein detection (e.g., immunohistochemistry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting).
  •  Basic and cutting-edge methods in molecular biology (e.g., single cell and bulk RNA sequencing).

Requirements
PhD degree in biology or biomedicine with a special focus of expertise in reproductive biology or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in biology or biomedicine with a special focus of expertise in reproductive biology.

The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The successful candidates must have excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

Additional qualifications
It is a strong advantage to have strong experience in reproductive biology, cell culture models, immunohistochemistry, and gonadal physiology in humans and rodents.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of two years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date 2024-11-08 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
