Postdoctoral position in hydrothermal processes in volcanic systems

Research at the Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU) section of the Department of Earth Sciences covers a broad range of topics, including mineral and metal resources for society and the energy transition, geohazards and resilient communities, climate change, and active biodiversity. The Geochemistry, Petrology, and Volcanology Group at NRHU is currently seeking a postdoctoral candidate to contribute to the ERC-funded project ROTTnROCK. The project aims to investigate how hydrothermal alteration impacts rock stability and contributes to the at times unpredictable behavior of volcanoes by integrating results from remote sensing, mineralogy and geochemistry, rock mechanics, and numerical modeling. Duties
Research focuses on the mineralogy and geochemistry of hydrothermally altered rock suites from a range of volcanoes (e.g. Canary Islands, Indonesia, Iceland, central and south America). The postdoctor will contribute to the building of our laboratory, where high-temperature simulations of alteration processes will take place. Additionally, as a member of the “RottnRock” team, the postdoctor will collaborate closely with other project PIs and members based at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, Université de Strasbourg, and University College Dublin.

Requirements
PhD degree in the broad fields of mineralogy, petrology, and/or geochemistry or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the broad fields of mineralogy, petrology, and/or geochemistry. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

The role requires experience with mineral and rock analysis and prior working knowledge of hydrothermally altered rocks. In addition, stable isotope experience and/or prior knowledge in microbeam approaches, such as SEM, EBSB, and possibly SIMS is required. The ideal candidate should also demonstrate the ability to take initiative and work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are furthermore essential, along with proven expertise in writing scientific publications.

Additional qualifications
Swedish language skills are advantageous. Experience with science outreach is also relevant, as the project’s results may be presented and discussed in popular science journals or in the media. Experience with high-temperature experimental petrology would be considered an extra merit.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date 15 January 2025 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
