Research assistant
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 90 persons are employed at the Department and approximately 1000 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph.D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se. 

The Alva Myrdal Center for Nuclear Disarmament (AMC), was established in 2021 at Uppsala University to provide education, research and policy support on disarmament issues. AMC studies the entire disarmament process; prerequisites and obstacles, negotiation and decision-making as well as implementation and verification. The department is now looking for 1-3 research assistant/s (full-time position, 3 months employment), for a research project focusing on nuclear disarmament and arms control negotiations, with project leader Isak Svensson. The employment will start in early October 2024.

Project Description
The aim of the project is to work on the collect systematic data on nuclear negotiations, in terms of outcomes and dynamics. AMC is building up a comprehensive dataset on negotiations, including bilateral and multilateral negotiations on arms control, nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation (NucNeg) worldwide after 1946. The project will contribute by providing a comprehensive, systematic and up-to-date mapping of the nuclear negotiations, including situating, and lay the basis for an annual report of nuclear negotiations of 2024.

Duties
The main work consists of collecting data on nuclear negotiations, but also carrying out initial descriptive analysis and visualization. Other administrative tasks might also be part of the role. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in peace and conflict studies, or equivalent
  • Excellent English skills (both verbal and written)
  • Very good collaborative ability and ability to work independently.

Additional qualifications

  • Experience of data collection, especially in peace and conflict research or similar
  • Good knowledge of nuclear disarmament issues
  • Good knowledge of statistics and statistics programs.

About the employment
The employment is a: temporary position, 3 months. Scope of employment: 100%. Starting date: 10 October, or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
