Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Postdoctoral position in quantum matter theory

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of Uppsala University's largest departments, with around 400 employees, of which around 125 are doctoral students. The department conducts world-class research and education in both theoretical and experimental physics and has extensive collaboration with the outside world. The research is carried out in 14 research programs and touches on everything from the incredibly small to the extremely large in, for example, energy supply, climate development, new materials, and the universe. This whole spectrum of research is also reflected in the department's courses and educational programs. Every year, around 2.500 students study courses at bachelor’s and master’s level at the department. Read more at https://www.uu.se/en/department/physics-and-astronomy.

The position is within the Quantum Matter Theory research program, with interests spanning from strongly correlated, superconducting, and topological states of matter to quantum information. The project will be carried out in the research group of Prof. Annica Black-Schaffer, currently consisting of twelve Ph.D. students and postdocs. For more information, please visit the group webpage: materials-theory.physics.uu.se/blackschaffer.

Research area and duties: We are looking for an ambitious and motivated postdoc in quantum matter theory for a project on the effects of quantum metric on the properties of matter and ordered phases, especially superconductivity. The project will focus on materials with real space inhomogeneity, such as disorder, aperiodic crystalline arrangements, and moiré patterns. The project will involve both numerical simulations and analytical work. The postdoc candidate is expected work both independently and in collaboration with other group members and external collaborators.

Requirements: Ph.D. degree in physics or related subject. The Ph.D. degree must have been obtained at the start of the employment and no more than three years prior to the application deadline, however, periods of e.g. parental or sick leave may be deducted from this three-year period.

The applicant must have a strong background in topological phases of matter, including quantum geometric descriptions of matter. Fluency in both written and spoken English is a requirement.

Additional qualifications: We are searching for a postdoc candidate how is responsible, self-motivated, and have demonstrated independence in research, and at the same time work well in a research group. Emphasis will be therefore be placed on personal abilities, including independence, motivation, as well good organizational and collaborative skills. Emphasis will also be placed on the ability to publish scientific work in high-quality journals and to give presentations at scientific meetings. Programming skills are also advantageous.

About the employment: The employment is a temporary position of two years, with a possibility of a one year extension, according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date: 2025-02-01 or upon agreement. Placement: Uppsala.
