Uppsala University, Department of Organismal Biology

The Department of Organismal Biology at Uppsala University explores the evolution, systematics, development and function on the organismal level.

At the program of physiology and environmental toxicology, we are using molecular tools and experimental models to investigate how cellular and molecular mechanisms affect the physiology and toxic responses of the whole organism in animals, human cells, microbes and photosynthetic organisms.
We are now looking for a Project Assistant at the program of Physiology and Environmental Toxicology.

Duties
We are looking for a person to work independently and carefully within a project related to the validation of a proposed OECD test guideline. In this guideline, chicken embryos are used to assess the ability of chemicals to induce reproductive disorders in birds. More precisely, the work involves a large number of dissections of chicken embryos; the internal genitalia are anatomically assessed, sampled and photographed. The analyzes performed include genetic sexing, quantitative PCR and image analysis. In addition, the work requires ongoing accurate documentation of the experiments as well as being involved in writing a report.

Requirements

  • University education in molecular biology

The person must be able to

  • skillfully dissect small structures under the microscope
  • perform RNA extraction on small tissue samples with good results
  • perform image analysis very carefully
  • document the experiments accurately
  • work efficiently, but carefully and independently in general

Additional qualifications
Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. To fit into the role, you need to be able to work independently and in a structured manner. You are responsible and thorough in carrying out both practical and written tasks. We often work several people together and value ability of cooperation and high social skills, generally.
