Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Do you want to work with software development for hyperon physics within the Belle II experiment, together with competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Then you are welcome to apply for a 9 months researcher’s position at Uppsala University.

One of the most challenging problems in contemporary physics is to understand the strong force that binds quarks and gluons into hadrons, e.g. protons and neutrons. This intriguing puzzle is addressed in the wide, dynamic field of hadron physics.

Our research group is internationally renowned for our novel studies of hyperons (heavy, unstable siblings of the proton) and for our scientific and technical contributions to the BESIII experiment in China and the future PANDA experiment at FAIR, Germany. We recently joined the Belle II experiment in Japan and have been invited to participate in the international EU project JENNIFER3 on machine learning techniques in particle- and hadron physics.

Duties
The main task will be to implement and test a geometric deep-learning (GDL) pipeline for track reconstruction for the Belle II experiment in Japan. The pipeline has previously been developed and implemented for the STT detector in PANDA, and proven successful in reconstructing long-lived hyperons and slow pions. Since such particles also provide a great challenge within Belle II, it is of great inpoertance to investigate whether the GDL pipeline can improve the track reconstruction of the Belle II software.

In addition, the researcher will be expected to contribute to general software developments within Belle II, and supervise a guest PhD student with his development to further improve the pipeline itself.

Requirements
We are looking for a person with a PhD degree in physics, with specialization in experimental hadron physics, particle tracking, machine learning algorithms and hyperon physics. In particular, expertise in GDL is of crucial importance. Oral and written proficiency in English is important.

Additional qualifications
Experience in student supervision is desirable, as well as ability to function in a group.
