Postdoctoral position in cardiac physiology
Uppsala University, Department of Medical Cell Biology
The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has more than 110 employees, of which about 25 are doctoral students, 10 postdoctoral fellows, and 40 researchers, teachers and professors.
Project
We have developed a mouse model of pulmonary hypertension with right ventricular strain and decompensation. The current project is focused on cardiac contractility using both in vivo and ex vivo methods with the idea of testing potential novel therapeutics.
The project is headed by intensivist and physiologist Michael Hultström and cardiologist and physiologist Henrik Isackson who together vow for clinically relevant research aims and a thorough understanding of circulatory pathophysiology. In addition, the group has a wide local and international network, and access to relevant patient biobanks to enable clinical validation of results.
Duties
As postdoctoral fellow in the lab you will be expected to perform experiments both in vivo and ex vivo including treatment of the animals before experiments, echocardiography, and blood pressure measurements. Ex vivo methods included in the project are constant pressure Langendorff heart perfusion and evaluation of sarcomere function using skinned fibers. Standard molecular biology techniques such as qPCR, protein electrophoresis, western blotting, and more are available in the laboratory. In addition, the duties will include data analysis using R, and writing of articles and grants, as well as presenting findings at national and international conferences. The duties will include lab maintenance, and may include teaching for the interested applicant. An individualized postdoc training program will be provided, and you will be offered additional training for techniques you are not familiar with.
Requirements
PhD degree in circulatory or cardiac physiology or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in circulatory or cardiac physiology . The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
You have experience with animal husbandry and evaluation of circulatory and cardiac function in rodents. FELASA certification in Sweden is required or to be attained within the first months of training. Experience with mice, and specific techniques used in the project is a plus. To succeed in this position, you have a keen interest in cardiac physiology and do well in a collaborative environment, you are self-motivated and able to work independently with your project. Fluent knowledge of English is required, in particular scientific writing.
