What is the GECO Project?
**What is the GECO Project?** GECO stands for “Gamify Energy Communities”.

Before we tackle the definition of “gamify”, a few words about energy communities: ECs are (typically) rural communities collaborating to increase their energy self-sufficiency, improve the robustness of their (hyper) local energy system, or decrease their energy usage and waste.

GECO wants to help rural communities (starting on Gotland, together with our project partner Energicentrum Gotland) start and maintain a productive energy community. We want to apply design principles from game design and digital product design to create a software solution that assists rural communities in doing that.

So far, we have engaged with representatives of nearly 20 rural communities, conducted in-depth interviews, conducted extensive research on ECs, and developed six prototypes of potential solutions to address the challenges we've identified.

We believe that:

- establishing and maintaining productive group dynamics
- picking a suitable energy project

are the two major factors preventing rural communities from starting an energy community, once they have heard of the concept.
