Uppsala University, Department of Medicinal Chemistry

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has about 85 employees and here, doctoral students, teachers, researchers and administrators work closely together in a creative and open environment. More information about the department can be found at www.ilk.uu.se.

The research at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry spans a wide range of subjects such as medicinal chemistry, organic synthesis, analytical pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical physical chemistry and preclinical positron emission tomography. The department has established environments for early phase antibacterial drug development and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics. We have obtained temporary funding for an ongoing cross-disciplinary project encompassing development of a metabolomics-based approach for evaluation of the mechanism of action for new antibacterial candidate substances.

We have an open position as researcher in this project.

Duties
The researcher will mainly work with development, validation and application of analytical methods based on chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry in metabolomics studies of bacteria in different environments. Data handling and data evaluation with multivariate methods will also be included. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with medicinal chemists and microbiologists.

Requirements
We welcome applicants with a Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry or any other subject area that the employer deems to be equivalent. Experience in analysis of organic compounds with chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques is a requirement. Experience in metabolomics studies of bacteria is also a requirement.

Very good organizational skills and flexibility are required, since the applicant will work in a complex research project. Good communication and collaboration skills are necessary, since the work will include internal and external interactions. Good English skills, both in oral communication and in writing is a requirement. The applicant is expected to work independently and to take initiatives. Particular weight will be given to personal suitability in the selection process.

Additional qualifications
Experience in studies of antibacterial substances with metabolomics is meritorious and knowledge in R programming.

Application
The application shall be written in English or in Swedish and it shall contain a personal letter (maximum 1 A4), a CV and degree certificates. Also enclose at least one letter of recommendation and contact information (name, email, phone number) to at least one earlier employer or colleague.

Selection
The applications will be ranked based on the following criteria: fulfilment of requirements, earlier experience and personal suitability.
