Electrification and digitalisation are among the largest areas for the future in the conversion to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in the areas - renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 6G communication and wireless sensor networks as well as research and education within Life Science, smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 150 employees that all contribute to important technical energy and health challenges at the Ångström Laboratory.

The position will be at the division Networked Embedded Systems, at the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Project description
The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing domains of societal and industrial importance such as healthcare, aerospace, critical infrastructure monitoring, and process control. Most resource-constrained IoT devices are battery-powered. Such a design choice provides a quick path to working implementations, but entails crucial drawbacks, not at least from an environmental point of view. The Division of Networked Embedded Systems is looking for a postdoctorial researcher that will help to push the area of battery-free Internet of Things with a focus on analog backscatter.

Duties

  • Design of communication protocols and system support for battery-free Internet of Things with analog backscatter. Application areas range from microrobotics and structural health monitoring to in-body communication.
  • Implementation of the protocols and software on resource-constrained devices that employ analog backscatter.
  • Evaluation of the implementation, analysis of the results and co-authoring scientific publications.
  • The work duties can also include teaching. No more than 20%.

Requirements

  • The applicant must hold a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in electrical engineering or computer science or related areas.
  • The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas or related areas: analog backscatter communication, intermittent computing, and energy harvesting.
  • Experience with embedded programming, for example, the Contiki operating system.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • We put an emphasis on your personal qualities such as good collaboration and communication skills with other researchers. You should be purposeful, structured and able to work effectively both individually and in groups.
