Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - BMC

A position as a researcher in the group of Prof. Ylva Ivarsson, in the research program of Biochemistry, on the topic of protein-protein interactions mediated by de novo proteins is available in Chemistry BMC.

Department of Chemistry – BMC conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. More than 100 people work at the department. New employees and students are recruited from all over the world and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala, which facilitates collaborations with research groups in biology, pharmacy, medicine and SciLifeLab and gives access to advanced infrastructure for experimental and theoretical studies. You can find more information about us here.

In this project we will elucidate the prevalence of short linear motifs (SLiMs) in de novo proteins. We will use proteomic peptide-phage display for large-scale screening of SLiM-based interactions. Interactions will be characterized using biophysical, structural and cell-based methods. The project is a collaboration with the group of Prof. Erich Bornberg-Bauer in Munster (Germany) and the group of Klara Hlouchova in Prague (Czech Republic).

Duties
The position will include expression and purification of recombinant proteins, proteomic peptide phage display and affinity measurements. You will also be involved in bioinformatic analysis and cell-based experiments. The position will include summarizing results and presenting them through oral and written presentations, including manuscript writing.

Requirements
To qualify for an employment as a researcher you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in biochemistry, structural biology, molecular biology or related fields. You should have a strong background in protein biochemistry.

We attach great importance to personal qualities such as that you are flexible, have the ability to work independently on the project, and also the ability to cooperate with other members of the team, as well as with national and international collaborators. You are expected to take initiatives, be achievement oriented and have a high research integrity. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English.

Additional qualifications
You should have experience of expressing and purifying recombinant protein, of conducting affinity measurements using biophysical techniques and of proteomic peptide-phage display. The project will include handling larger datasets, and hence it is desirable that you have experience of large-scale data analysis. Experience of cell-based assays is valued.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position, 6 months. Scope of employment 100%. Starting date as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
