Uppsala University, Department of Organismal Biology

The lab focuses on understanding the evolution of genomes and the genetic basis of adaptation in fungi. We recently discovered that many fungi harbour massive transposable elements, named Starships, that mobilize a vast diversity of fungal genes. We have now deciphered how the Starships move within genomes, but a growing amount of evidence suggests that they are also capable of moving between genomes. The main goal of the PhD position is to demonstrate in a laboratory setting the horizontal transfer of a Starship between different fungi. This will be done by genetically modifying model strains so that successful transfers can be screened at high throughput on selective media. Additional objectives for understanding what factors influence the horizontal transfer will also be a core part of the project.

Duties
The primary methodology will consist of well established genetic transformations. This includes, PCR, primer design, bacterial cloning, yeast cloning, and filamentous fungal transformations. Fungal culturing with a variety of media and conditions will also be used. Results will be written for publication in scientific journals and presented at international conferences.

Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in Biology, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

Additional qualifications
Experience with molecular techniques is a necessity. Additional assets include microbial culturing, particularly of fungi, and fungal or bacterial transformations. Knowledge on presenting data and on conducting statistical analyses is also a plus. Candidates who demonstrate strengths in organization, problem solving, communication, and collaboration will be preferred. The applicant must have documented experience and proficiency in oral and written presentation in English.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
