Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 290 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website.

Duties
The project focuses on the preparation and functional studies of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with redox active components as thin films on conducting substrates. Particular focus will lie on studies to elucidate how charge propagates through the MOFs. Molecular catalysts of energy relevance, in particular for hydrogen production and CO2 reduction, will be incorporated into the redox-conducting MOFs, and the performance of these hybrid electrodes will be studied by electrochemical techniques, supported by simulations.

Requirements
The proposed project comprises elements of organic synthesis, MOF fabrication and characterization by common organic as well as materials chemistry methods, surface chemistry, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, and theoretical simulations. The project will partly be conducted in collaboration with partners at UU, in Sweden and abroad. Representative recent publications are: J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2019, 15942; J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2020, 11941, ACS Nano 2023, 21595 and Nature Commun. 2023, #4388

The candidate must have:

  • been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Additional qualifications

  • you will have experience in synthetic molecular organic or inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry or coordination chemistry, with an interest for physical chemistry
  • Previous experience in the synthesis and characterization of metal-organic frameworks is advantageous.
  • Previous documented experience in molecular electrochemistry is advantageous.
  • The ability of the PhD student to work independently, to be innovative and not afraid to go outside the traditional discipline boundaries is appreciated.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
